TITHES, TITHING - Eng. law. A right to the tenth part of the produce of, lands, the stocks upon lands, and the personal industry of the inhabitants. These tithes are raised for the support of the clergy.

Fortunately, in the United States, the clergy can be supported by the zeal of the people for religion, and there are, no tithes.

TITHING - Eng. law. Formerly a district containing ten men with their families. In each tithing there was a tithing man whose duty it was to keep the peace, as a constable now is bound to do.
