Competent
Properly or legally qualified, able; capable of understanding or ofacting reasonably. Competent evidence is both relevant and proper to the issuebeing litigated. A competent court has proper jurisdiction over the person orproperty at issue. A criminal defendant is competent to stand trial if he isable to consult with a lawyer with a reasonable degree of rationalunderstanding and has a rational as well as a factual understanding of theproceedings against him. An individual is competent to make a will if heunderstands the extent of his property, the identity of the natural objects ofhis bounty, and the consequences of making a will.
