Definition Of:

Admissible evidence

Law DictionaryLaw Dictionary
Evidence that may be introduced in court to aid the judgeor jury in deciding the merits of a case. Each jurisdiction has establishedrules of evidence to determine what evidence is admissible. A judge may excludeotherwise admissible evidence when he or she determines that its value isoutweighed by such factors as undue consumption of time, prejudice, confusionof issues, or a danger that the jury will be misled. A lurid, gory photograph, for example, depicting the scene of the crime, the weapon used, or the injuryto the victim may have very high probative value as to several issues in acriminal trial, but since it may cause undue prejudice in the minds of thejurors, it will be excluded if there is any other way to prove the necessaryfacts.
